WHY THINGS TAKE TIME

Sometimes I get emails from people asking me why it's taking "so much time" before I update *insert title here*, why I don't add more of *insert title/genre here*, etc. etc. And instead of answering these emails over and over, here's an article telling you why things simply take time.

1. I RUN THIS SITE FOR FREE

This means several things. It doesn't only mean I pay website bills, it also means that I don't get an income from my site (well, not enough to live off of, at least, considering the low price of Horrorlove Hotel bookings and custom art orders :P) and that again, means I have to go to work to earn some money so I can pay bills and buy food and such. This does, of course, give less time left for drawing.

2. NOT GETTING PAID = NOT RUSHING THINGS

When you have a job you're getting paid for, it can often be justified if you have to work a little extra getting things done, and working on things you don't want to do. That's why Horrorlove Hotel bookings that have been paid for, and custom art orders, are being finished quickly. But since I do all the rest for free, it means I can't rush things. If I don't want to work on a certain project, I wait until the day I want to. Rushing things just gets you tired of it all, and what I want with my site is having fun and do exactly what I want when I want - not killing myself from overworking with things I don't enjoy.

3. I DON'T WANT TO WORK ON EVERYTHING ALWAYS

I have several comic projects and other things I work on. And no matter how much I enjoy these, it doesn't mean I wanna work with them every day. Sometimes, I'm simply getting a little tired of a certain project, and have to put it away for a while. I'll never know for how long. And of course, this might cause delays and projects not being updated very frequently.

4. I TRY TO DO MY BEST WHEN I CREATE SOMETHING

If I rushed my art, I would be able to have very frequent updates. However, I just won't do that. What's the point in creating art, if I don't try doing my best all the time? And if I don't try to do my best - how will I be able to improve? Now, creating a comic page as an example, consists of several steps that all takes time. The sketch, the pencil drawing, and then the coloring. The coloring takes a lot of time. Of course I would be able to do it much faster...if I just used the "fill each area with one color" technique. So why don't I do that to spare time? Well, here you can see why:

The last example is a page from the comic "Knight X Tales - First Adventure", and the first example is the same page how it would look if I just used the "fill area with color" quick-and-simple technique. Sure, it doesn't even use half of the time the other in-depth shading technique does...but what's the result? Something that just looks flat, uninspired and unfinished. I simply can't make myself do stuff like that, when I'm able to do it better.

5. AND THE LAST THING...

...is that I have a life outside of the internet that requires time also. Live with it :P
